Alexander Calder "Aspen" Notebook
This hardcover journal features Alexander Calder's Aspen (1949) debossed on the front, with the artist's signature on the back. The endpapers are a light floral pattern, and the notebook is bound with a silver wire-o. Aspen (1949) was originally sketched for the Buchholz Gallery/Curt Valentin in New York.
Throughout his career, Alexander Calder illustrated many of his mobiles and stabiles for exhibition catalogues. These sketches express the dynamic nature of his output in two dimensions, and offer valuable insight into their composition. He once wrote, “A mobile in motion leaves an invisible wake behind it, or rather, each element leaves an individual wake behind its individual self.”
