Alexander Calder "the Blériot" Hardcover Notebook
This leather-feel hardcover journal features Alexander Calder's The Blériot (1949) debossed on the front cover. The endpaper illustrations come from an extraordinary double-sided drawing that Calder made from memory in the lead-up to his 1943 retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The interior pages are printed in reverse (light gray pages with white lines/dots).
Throughout his career, Alexander Calder illustrated many of his mobiles and stabiles for exhibition catalogues. These sketches express the dynamic nature of his output in two dimensions and offer valuable insight into their composition. He once wrote, “A mobile in motion leaves an invisible wake behind it, or rather, each element leaves an individual wake behind its individual self.”
